Driveways & Walkways in Vancouver
The single most impactful curb appeal upgrade. Engineered with a deeper base for heavy daily use and BC's freeze and thaw cycles. Engineered for Vancouver's conditions, where vancouver receives 1,150 to 1,400 mm of annual rainfall depending on neighborhood.
Driveways & Walkways Built for Vancouver's Conditions
Your driveway is the first thing visitors see and the surface your vehicles cross every single day. In the Fraser Valley, driveways face a unique combination of challenges: heavy rainfall that saturates the base, freeze and thaw cycles that heave poorly prepared surfaces, and the daily weight of vehicles that can crack and rut inadequate installations. An interlocking paver driveway engineered for these conditions will outperform poured concrete and asphalt in both longevity and appearance.
A driveways & Walkways project in Vancouver has to handle conditions most contractors underestimate. Most of Vancouver sits on glacial till with clay pockets and, in some neighborhoods, fill from historic grading. West side soils (Kitsilano, Point Grey, Dunbar) tend to be better structured. East side soils vary more and often include fill. Downtown and the waterfront have completely engineered substrates over deep fills. Every project starts with an on site soil assessment. Vancouver receives 1,150 to 1,400 mm of annual rainfall depending on neighborhood. The west side is slightly wetter than the east side. Winter freeze thaw is mild. Summers are drier than the Fraser Valley but less dry than Tsawwassen. Coastal fog is common along the water. Trueform engineers every driveways & Walkways project for the actual ground under your property and the actual weather it will see, not a generic Lower Mainland spec.
The City of Vancouver requires building permits for retaining walls over 1.2 metres. The Protection of Trees Bylaw covers any tree with a DBH over 20 cm, and removal or significant root disturbance requires a permit. Heritage overlays apply in Shaughnessy, parts of Kitsilano, and Mount Pleasant. Permit timelines are longer and more variable than in other municipalities; we recommend submitting well before your target start date. We complete driveways & Walkways projects across all of Vancouver, including Kitsilano, Point Grey, Dunbar, Kerrisdale, Shaughnessy, Arbutus Ridge, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, West End, Mackenzie Heights, South Cambie, Oakridge. Every quote starts with a free onsite consultation so we can match the design to your lot, your budget, and the permit timeline that applies to your address.
How We Build Driveways & Walkways in Vancouver
Property Assessment
We evaluate grade changes, drainage patterns, vehicle access requirements, and existing surface conditions.
Demolition & Excavation
Remove existing surface, excavate to engineered depth (8 to 12 inches for driveways), and establish proper grades.
Base Construction
Compacted gravel base installed in lifts with density testing. Edge restraint and transition details at all connections.
Paver Installation
Pavers installed in pattern, border courses laid, joints filled with polymeric sand, and full surface compacted.
Premium Materials. Full Warranty.
80mm Pavers
Thicker driveway rated pavers from Belgard, Unilock, and Techo-Bloc. Required for vehicular traffic and heavy loads.
Herringbone Pattern
The strongest interlocking pattern for driveways. Distributes load in all directions and resists lateral creep.
Polymeric Sand
Joint stabilizing sand that hardens to resist weed growth, ant intrusion, and washout while allowing flex.
Geotextile Fabric
Installed between native soil and gravel base to prevent soil migration and maintain base integrity.

Trueform Tips
Assume tree protection is part of every Vancouver project. Submit permits early because Vancouver timelines are unpredictable. On laneway house lots, design the full backyard as a single project rather than piecemeal. In Shaughnessy and heritage areas, verify material approvals before ordering.
Driveways & Walkways Cost in Vancouver
Paver driveway costs in the Fraser Valley range from $30 to $65 per square foot installed, reflecting the deeper base and thicker pavers required. A typical two car driveway (400 to 600 sq ft) runs approximately $15,000 to $30,000. Walkways are typically $25 to $50 per square foot. Demolition and disposal of existing surfaces is included in our estimates. Contact us for a free onsite consultation. In Vancouver specifically, the cost driver to watch is the soil and access combination. Assume tree protection is part of every Vancouver project. Dunbar Small Lot Backyard Transformation
A Dunbar 33 foot lot with a new laneway house and two mature maples needed a backyard that worked for a family of four without harming the trees. We built a 28 square metre Techo-Bloc paver patio between the main house and the laneway, a low Allan Block garden wall, a small artificial turf play zone, and integrated LED path lighting connecting all three structures. Both maples were preserved with air spade root work and a certified arborist on site.

What Vancouver Homeowners Say
We have a 33 foot lot and thought we could not fit a real backyard. Trueform designed a patio, seating, play zone, and lighting that makes the whole space usable. They preserved our magnolia perfectly.
Nicole H.
Kitsilano, Vancouver
The tree bylaw stopped our first contractor cold. Trueform brought an arborist and designed around both maples. The finished yard is better because of it.
Raj P.
Dunbar, Vancouver
Our laneway house build left the backyard a mess. Trueform treated the main house and laneway as one outdoor project and the result is seamless.
