Excavation & Grading in Burnaby

Professional excavation and grading for patios, driveways, retaining walls, building pads, and full yard regrading across the Fraser Valley. Engineered for Burnaby's conditions, where burnaby receives approximately 1,400 to 1,500 mm of annual rainfall, less than Coquitlam or Maple Ridge but still significant.

Excavation & Grading Built for Burnaby's Conditions

Excavation and grading is the invisible foundation of every outdoor construction project. A paver patio, retaining wall, driveway, or building pad is only as good as the ground it sits on. Improper excavation leads to settling. Poor grading causes drainage problems. Inadequate compaction results in structural failure. At Trueform, we treat excavation and grading as precision work, not just digging and moving dirt.

A excavation & Grading project in Burnaby has to handle conditions most contractors underestimate. North Burnaby (Burnaby Heights, Capitol Hill, Lochdale) is glacial till with rocky substrate, similar in feel to West Vancouver. Central Burnaby (Brentwood, Deer Lake, Cascade Heights) is silty loam over glacial till. Big Bend is Fraser River alluvium with a high water table. Excavation conditions vary significantly by neighborhood. Burnaby receives approximately 1,400 to 1,500 mm of annual rainfall, less than Coquitlam or Maple Ridge but still significant. Urban heat island effects mean summers can be warm, and winter freeze thaw is mild but frequent. Capitol Hill and Westridge see slightly more precipitation than south Burnaby. Trueform engineers every excavation & Grading project for the actual ground under your property and the actual weather it will see, not a generic Lower Mainland spec.

The City of Burnaby requires a building permit for retaining walls over 1.2 metres. The tree protection bylaw is strictly enforced, and any tree with a DBH over 20 cm cannot be removed or significantly disturbed without a permit. Burnaby also has streamside protection zones around several urban creeks. We verify all protection zones and tree bylaw impacts before quoting. We complete excavation & Grading projects across all of Burnaby, including Burnaby Heights, Capitol Hill, Lochdale, Westridge, Brentwood, Willingdon Heights, Deer Lake, Metrotown, South Slope, Big Bend, Government Road, Cascade Heights, Buckingham Heights. Every quote starts with a free onsite consultation so we can match the design to your lot, your budget, and the permit timeline that applies to your address.

How We Build Excavation & Grading in Burnaby

01

Survey & Planning

Establish existing grades, design target elevations, and plan excavation depths, fill requirements, and drainage flow.

02

Excavation

Machine or hand excavation to engineered depth. Material stockpiled for reuse or hauled offsite.

03

Grading & Fill

Subgrade shaped to target elevation with proper slopes. Fill material placed and spread in controlled lifts.

04

Compaction & Verification

Each lift mechanically compacted to specification. Final grades checked against design elevations.

Premium Materials. Full Warranty.

Compact Excavators

Rubber tracked mini excavators that access tight residential sites while minimizing lawn and landscape damage.

Compacted Gravel Fill

Crushed gravel in 3/4 minus gradation for subbase and fill applications. Compacts to stable, load bearing density.

Geotextile Fabric

Woven and nonwoven fabrics that separate soil layers, prevent migration, and reinforce weak subgrades.

Plate Compactors

Vibratory plate compactors for granular base compaction. Forward and reversible models for different soil types.

Trueform Tips

Never skip the tree protection plan in Burnaby, because the city actively enforces it. In Big Bend, budget for dewatering during deep excavation. In Metrotown strata projects, verify building envelope warranty constraints before starting. And on every Burnaby project, start with a site access plan.

Excavation & Grading Cost in Burnaby

Excavation costs depend on volume, material type, site access, and disposal requirements. Small scale excavation (patio prep, planting beds) costs $50 to $100 per cubic yard. Large scale excavation with machine work and hauling runs $30 to $60 per cubic yard. Full yard regrading for a typical residential lot costs $3,000 to $10,000 depending on the extent of work. Deer Lake Urban Garden Patio

Deer Lake, Burnaby

A Deer Lake backyard with four mature trees (two western red cedars, a Japanese maple, and an apple tree) required a design that preserved all root zones. We used an air spade and hand dig approach inside the critical root zones, installed a 36 square metre Belgard Mega-Lafitt paver patio, built a stone seat wall around a gas fire pit, and finished with a low voltage LED lighting scheme that highlights the trees at night. All trees were preserved and remain healthy.

What Burnaby Homeowners Say

We were worried our two old cedars could not survive a patio install. Trueform brought in an arborist and designed the patio to preserve every root. Both trees are thriving.

Helena W.

Deer Lake, Burnaby

Our lot is on a slope with rock showing through in two places. They adapted the wall design to work with the rock instead of fighting it. Zero surprises during the build.
